Raised at Maketū Marae, in Kāwhia, at the foot of the Tainui canoe. My art pays tribute to the powerful legacy of our voyaging ancestors, who sailed from our traditional homeland of Hawaiki, to Aotearoa, aboard the Tainui canoe. The majority of my art, can be broken down into two closely related categories.

Firstly, it is my creative method of preserving the names of our illustrious ancestors and the traditional narratives associated with them, for my children and future generations. Secondly, my art is an attempt to reconnect with the traditional worldview of my ancestors and the sacred knowledge they utilized to navigate between different realms and spaces. In conclusion, my work is a tribute to my mother, Shirley Tuteao (nee Kana) and her selfless devotion to our people. As she reflects generations of loyalty, dedication and service to Kiingitanga and its ideals of kotahitanga (unity) and aroha (love).
